Assessing an examination

Depending on the type of examination, the assessment process can consist of an automatic evaluation phase and a manual evaluation phase or only an evaluation phase. This phase of assessing the achieved performance also includes the communication of the assessment and its forwarding to the student and the examination office.

 

Evaluation and assessment = judgement

The terms evaluation and assessment are separated from each other in this context - perhaps somewhat artificially - in order to clearly distinguish two processes.

Evaluation is understood to mean any automatic, i.e. machine-generated, purely quantitative evaluation offered by the test module in the examination Moodle. However, since for reasons of data protection a judgement on the performance achieved may not be made solely on the basis of the calculation in a software (§96c ZSP-HU), the immediate reporting of the result to the student must be switched off in the test module.

The results - not the calculation, but the fit between task and answer behaviour - must be checked again by the examiners for conspicuous error patterns, e.g. typical typing errors, before the grading is communicated. On this basis, you as the examiner determine the grade, which is to be understood as the overall judgement of the examination performance.

In contrast, the assessment is a qualitative, criterion-led process that is carried out by individuals. In this case, you as the examiner make evaluative comments in the margin of a paper, for example, which then form the basis for the grade and thus for the overall judgement of the performance.

 

Online (joint) assessment

Several examiners can work simultaneously on the assessment of the examination performance if they coordinate, i.e. distribute the examination cases. In addition to the free-text items of the Test Module, examinations submitted via the Assignment Module (file, text entry) can usually also be assessed online.

 

Communication of examination results

The results of the examinations should be communicated promptly. In addition to the conventional way via the examination office and AGNES, it makes sense to use the advantage of digital examinations to communicate the results to the students quickly. For example, you could send the assessment of an essay (assignment module) directly by e-mail from the examination course if you set the corresponding check mark there (Send feedback). Otherwise, you could send your students a message via the course in Lehrmoodle that they can now view the examination or their individual examination performance (test module).

 

Forwarding the results to the examination office

Due to the lack of an interface between Moodle and AGNES or POS, the results still have to be transmitted in the traditional way. First, you export the results from the examination Moodle, whereby you may have to manually supplement the list depending on the requirements of the responsible examination office (e.g. sorting by degree programme). Then send the examination results in an encrypted (!) e-mail to the responsible examination office.

Alternatively, you as examiners can agree with the responsible examination office that a representative with the role of "Examination Office" is given access to the relevant examination courses so that they can obtain the examination results themselves directly and thus avoid the (possibly insecure) diversions via e-mail.
